Late Work Penalties

The default in the SimUText system is to not have a penalty for late work, but you have the option to set up a late work penalty. The late work penalty will be applied to any Graded Questions and Feedback Questions submitted past the Due Date you set for the Assignment. If some questions in the assignment were submitted on time and some late, only those submitted late will be penalized.

To set a Late Work Penalty:

  1. Navigate to the Assignments page in your Instructor Portal.
  2. In the top right Late Work Penalty display, click the Pencil (Edit) button
  3. In the panel that opens, set the percentage you want deducted from any answers turned in late. A 20% deduction, for instance, would reduce the points received for late work by 20%. The display will show the maximum number of points the student would lose if they submitted all of the questions in an assignment after the due date (based on the global default points).
  4. Click the Save button.

Forgiving a Late Work Penalty for an Individual Student:

If a student submits answers to questions after the due date for an assignment, and you have set a late work penalty, they will not receive full points for those questions. If the student has a valid excuse, and you wish to give them full credit, you can do so as follows:

  1. Navigate to the Performance page in your Instructor Portal.
  2. Click on the Student Detail button for the appropriate assignment.
  3. Select that student from the drop-down list of students in the upper left.
  4. Click the checkbox in front of "Full Credit for Late Work?" in the lower right-hand corner of the light blue Points box.
  5. Click the Save button to the right.

This student will now receive full credit for any answers they submit on this assignment, regardless of the late work penalty.
