System Requirements for the SimUText Application
PLEASE NOTE: As of January 1, 2020, Microsoft will no longer support Windows 7 which means starting with the Summer 2020 term, we cannot guarantee that SimUText will run on Windows 7.
Students in courses using the SimUText System require access to the desktop SimUText application. The links below provide access to a version of SimUText that is suitable for use on public/shared computers. (It is the same version that is available to students for download on their own computers.) Installation in lab and remote server environments is permitted by the terms of service for the SimUText application. The current SimUText 2023/2024 for Windows and Mac is version 2.18.0 (as of 7/5/23).
The installation is good for the Fall 2023 and Winter/Spring 2024 terms. To test the connectivity of a working login to the SimUText server, use checkinstall@simbio.com / password='guestPW'
Important Notes
The SimUText application does not include the content (SimBio modules assigned by instructors) necessary for students to complete their work. Assigned modules are downloaded when the student logs in and starts their assignments, thus, user accounts must have write privileges to the current user's home directory. If students have persistent personal networked accounts, they should only have to download their assigned modules once. If machines are rolled back to a pristine condition between user sessions (using a system like Deep Freeze or similar management tools), then every time the student launches SimUText, they will have to download their assigned modules. This is not an obstacle to use; it simply adds a minute or two to the start of each student's work session.
SimBio may issue updates to the client application (e.g., minor bug fixes) that will require the software to be upgraded or reinstalled. By default, SimUText automatically prompts the user to download and install an upgrade package. If the user does not have permission to install the update, they will be able to dismiss the alert to update and can continue using the software. SimBio will alert instructors when updates are released. If you manage a computer lab and would like to be alerted when updates are released, please complete THIS FORM.
Additional notes: If installing or updating SimUText on lab or library (non-remote) computers presents problems, consider using the USB version, or requiring students to install the USB version on their own USB drives.
