Before students subscribe to your SimUText, please follow the sequence of steps below to configure the SimUText for your class. You can make changes later if needed.
FIRST: Create Course Sections
If your class is divided into lab or recitation sections, create SimUText sections before students start subscribing. Students will be prompted to select their course section during the registration process, but if they make a mistake, they can easily be moved to a different section later as explained here.
If course sections are not created before students register, then all registered students will be added to one section, and instructors will need to manually move students to the correct sections. Course sections can be added or removed later, if necessary. For more information, see the Course Sections section of this manual.
Creating sections first will also make it easier to attach co-instructors or TAs to course sections, and create due dates for assignments.
SECOND: Add Co-Instructors and Teaching Assistants
Navigate to the Instructors page to confirm that all instructors and TAs for your class appear in the list of available instructors for your school at the bottom of the page. If not, you can create a SimUText account for them by clicking on the teal Create New Instructor Account button at the bottom of the Instructors page. Then click the Add button to the right of each instructor and TA who will be assisting with your SimUText. For more information, see the Instructors section of this manual.
NOTE: If students' accounts are grouped into course sections, instructors and/or TAs should be attached to sections before students register. Co-Instructors' and/or TA's accounts can be removed from the SimUText at any time.
THIRD: Create Assignments, Scoring, and Due Dates
The Assignments page determines how students will access the SimUText materials. Students cannot view or interact with content in the SimUText application until it has been added to an assignment; however, they can register for SimUText before assignment configuration has been completed. Initial configuration includes the following steps:
- Optionally, set the Default Possible Points for All Assignments at the top of the Assignments page.
- Choose how to manage due dates if there are multiple course sections.
- Create Assignments.
- Choose content from the Unassigned Content area on the left-hand side of the Assignments page. When selected, the content will move into the “New Assignment” window.
- Set Assignment Name, Due Dates, content Release Dates, and Publish Scores Dates for the new assignment.
All assignment settings can be changed later if needed. For more information, see the Assignments section of this manual.
FOURTH: Distribute Student Registration Information
The Student Registration page contains instructions for students to subscribe to your SimUText. This link is unique to the SimUText for this term, so this specific access key must be posted each term. For more information, see the Student Registration section of this manual.
Note: If your Instructor Portal exhibits peculiar behavior, please try refreshing the page or clearing your cache and/or browser history and then refreshing the page. It's possible that your browser has saved some information from a previous release that is interfering with the new version.
